CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER - East Coast
Reports to: Major Gifts Manager
Location: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia or Washington DC
FLSA status: Exempt

Position Summary: The Major Gifts Officer in each region will be responsible for building a major gifts program for the assigned region. This position will be instrumental in establishing, implementing and promoting the goals of Best Friends Animal Society, raising funds, creating strong and solid relationships with significant prospects and donors and promoting the overall goals of Best Friends.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Raise major gifts of $10,000 and above.
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships with prospects and donors, assist prospect research, donor correspondence, the acknowledgement process and stewardship of donors.
  • Develop and maintain a major gifts portfolio of 100-125 major gifts prospects.
  • Understand and match the needs and objectives of prospective donors with the fund raising goals of Best Friends.
  • Coordinate and work with national staff in Utah.
  • Work and interact with respective local program staff and participate in special events, with a focus on and promotion of major gifts.
  • Help build a volunteer base in the local region.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Experience/Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Minimum of 5-7 years development experience, with successful experience in major gifts fundraising in a non-profit organization, preferably in a regional setting.
  • Understanding Planned Giving principles and vehicles, and ability to coordinate interactions with donors and planned giving officers to facilitate a gift.
  • Familiarity with the region's philanthropic and business communities.
  • High level of communication skills to express Best Friends' mission and fund raising objectives orally, and in writing to varied audiences, including potential donors and community members.
  • Travel to meet with prospects and donors in the region and attend meetings at the sanctuary in Utah as required.
  • Computer skills and knowledge of fundraising computer programs.
  • Valid Driver's License and access to transportation to travel on organization business.

FELINE VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
Reports to: Manager, Cat World
Location: Kanab, Utah
FLSA status: hourly

Position Summary: Working closely with vets and the Clinic, Feline Veterinary Technicians provide medical care to the cats at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary as part of the Cat World team.

Essential Duties:
  • Relate to caregivers and Cat World management regarding the health of the cats.
  • Assist the veterinarians in feline handling and general treatment. This includes communicating with them about the cats medical needs and progress.
  • Act as liaison between veterinarians and caregivers.
  • Have knowledge of the individual cats in order to best contribute to decisions on their medical care.
  • Monitor the health of the cats, including palpating bowels, performing blood glucose curves, post surgical care, wound care, simple check-ups (hydration, heart rate, pulse, respiration), general wellness checks, follow-ups at expiration of prescribed short-term medications, interim follow-ups for long-term medications, and ensuring cats are current on vaccinations.
  • Perform all aspects of lab work from venipuncture and cystocentesis to blood, urine, and fecal analysis.
  • Care of hospitalized animals.
  • Perform chart reviews and update the treatments database.
  • Schedule procedures at Happy Landings and the Clinic.
  • Participate in end-of-life decisions.
  • Sedate and prepare animals for surgery.
  • Help monitor patients during surgery and post surgery.
  • Prepare surgery packs and clean surgical equipment.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications, both oral and injectable.
  • Prepare and administer subcutaneous fluids.
  • Express bladders.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Experience/Requirements:
  • Veterinary Technician Certification or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of 1 year related experience.
  • Computer literate.
  • Must be experienced in the care and handling of cats.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to routinely lift 40 to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100 degrees
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including, but not limited to: climbing up and down ladders, lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning and bending

ADVERTISING COORDINATOR
Reports to: External Advertising Associate
Location: Kanab, Utah
FLSA status: Hourly

Position Summary: Responsible for managing classified ads, incoming display advertising requests, circulation, and provide support for other advertising functions. This is a full time position, located on-site at sanctuary.

Essential Duties:
  • Primary point of contact for clients desiring to place classified ads in the Best Friends magazine to include, coordination and accuracy of client's ads, and manage tracking process and payment.
  • Have knowledge of Best Friends magazine, including rates and marketing demographics
  • Route display advertising inquiries to Advertising Manager.
  • Fulfill magazine requests for advertisers.
  • Manage trial membership requests.
  • Monitor existing circulation for media kit updates, Statement of Ownership and CPM accuracy and keep track of magazines printed and circulated.
  • Interact with newsstand distributors by managing the billing for SRDS, Ingram Periodicals and Media Solutions.
  • Complete magazine print orders for the sancturary and sales reps.
  • Responsible for delivery of magazines to hotels, restaurants and other approprate places fo busness in Kanab.
  • Identify and pursue appropriate distribution outlets such as veterinarian offices, airports, bookstores, newsstands, libraries, hotels, pet boutiques, etc.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to support the advertising team.


Experience/Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Marketing, Sales or Advertising, or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Must have high level of interpersonal skills and confidence. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, self starter, professional, upbeat, energetic, flexible, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated exceptional communication (verbal and written), listening and customer service skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Familiarity with animal welfare issues is strongly desired
  • Must be able to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues
  • Must have proficiency with a variety of computer software applications in word processing and spreadsheets. Comfortable learning new software programs and using online information systems

SHIPPING AND RECEIVING CLERK
Reports to: Parcel Correspondent
Location: Kanab, Utah
FLSA status: Non-exempt (30 hours per week with benefits)

Position Summary: Receives, sorts and delivers packages and mail throughout the Sanctuary property accurately, timely and in a pleasant, courteous manner.

Essential Duties:
  • Retrieve, document, sort and deliver daily incoming and outgoing packages.
  • Assist in preparing and delivering member shipments when necessary.
  • Use UPS Worldship system to generate shipping labels.
  • Answer telephone and field questions from members in a timely, personable and professional manner.
  • Moves furniture/equipment and performs general maintenance as needed.
  • Provide general office support as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Experience/Requirements:
  • At least one year customer service experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels. Proven customer service skills.
  • An ability to work well independently.

  • Must be able to work out of doors in all weather conditions, with wide ranging temperatures.

LOS ANGELES PROGRAMS EVENTS SPECIALIST
Reports to: Los Angeles Programs Manager
Location: Los Angeles, CA
FLSA status: Exempt

Position Summary: Produces, orchestrates and coordinates events and promotions associated with Los Angeles Programs of Best Friends Animal Society.

Essential Duties:
  • Organize logistical details for all L.A. Programs events and Best Friends events that take place in Los Angeles to include, but not limited to: arranging venues, site equipment, entertainment, vendors, celebrity involvement, food and drink, signage, permits, insurance, security, EMTs, decorations, working with PR staff re: press releases and media inquiries, and any other tailored logistical needs each specific event may require
  • Organize and communicate with staff that act as the main point of contact for all animal rescue groups and animal control agencies as they may relate to specific events, to include, but not limited to: following up with staff on all correspondence, communication, and any turn-key activity in which Best Friends participates
  • Create, stay within, and monitor budgets for all events
  • Coordinate with LA Marketing and PR staff on all advertising, marketing and public relations needs for special events to include, but not limited to: TV, print, outdoor, posters, flyers, PSAs and press releases. Instigate timeline for all production and produced materials
  • Consistently and creatively find ways to increase revenue associated with fundraising events
  • Supervise arrangements for handling of all cash and individual donations prior to, at event and afterward to include, but not limited to: producing a follow-up donation report to be given to the Los Angeles Program Manager
  • Achieve fundraising goals, create awareness of Best Friends Los Angeles Programs and engage community support while ensuring that all messages tie into the key messages of Best Friends Animal Society
  • Follow-up after each event and promotion to include, but not limited to: ensuring sponsor reports with demographics and accountability are complete. Finalize budgets, thank and provide a report to all participating humane groups, include survey information from all participants in follow-up information, thanking committee and major celebrity participants, maintain careful documentation and management of participant lists, site layout, and specific activities that need improvement for the following year
  • Create a yearly Best Friends Los Angeles timeline and calendar for Best Friends staff, certain community calendars and all participating humane groups and all animal control shelters to alert them to events months in advance
  • Communicate and coordinate all aspects of event and promotions as they may intersect with other Best Friends Animal Society events and staff
  • Recruit (with the help of the volunteer coordinator) all aspects of events and promotions as they may intersect with other Best Friends Animal Society events
  • Follow-up with and acknowledge volunteers for their participation


Experience/Requirements:
  • At least two years experience in an event planning and execution role. Degree in related field a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people
  • Professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues
  • Willing and able to represent Best Friends position via all forms of public media as required
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Proven project management, financial planning and forecasting experience with track record in attaining stated goals
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills. Attention to detail
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
