COMMUNITY CAT INITIATIVES SPECIALIST
Reports to: Manager, Spay and Neuter
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Position Summary:
Work within Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets Utah team to develop, manage and oversee programs that benefit the state of Utah's community cats.  This includes working across the state with local municipalities, counties, state officials, shelters, rescues and animal control agencies on successful implementation of community cat programs and services.

Essential Duties:

  • Work across the state to develop position and policies on community cat issues.
  • Develop relationships with local municipalities, state officials, counties, shelters, rescues and animal control agencies.  Maintaining frequent contact with these parties which includes phone, email, and inperson meetings.
  • Work with local governments, shelters and animal control to implement targeted spay/neuter campaigns in at-risk communities.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials designed to increase acceptance of community cat programs within the community, within animal control and within the government.  This includes presentations, brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials.
  • Develop, monitor and support existing and new TNR programs. Work with city officials, animal control, caregivers, complainants, and other concerned parties. Provide training, support, mentoring, mediation and resources.
  • Work with the volunteer department to recruit, train and manage volunteers in targeted communities to assist with TNR. This includes delivering TNR boot camps on a regular basis.
  • Train, mentor, coordinate, insure resources and support to Trap Trading Posts across the state.
  • Administer low cost and free spay and neuter programs, currently includes the Feral Fix and Free Feral Fix Voucher programs.  Insure adherence to funding restrictions, maintain budget, track vouchers, and recruit and maintain relationships with participating veterinary clinics.
  • Across the state, develop relationships with veterinarians to increase the amount of low cost and free spay and neuter options in the state.  This includes developing and directing incentive programs for participating veterinarians and insuring timely and routine followup, especially with regards to billing and payments.
  • Provide and coordinate support and incentives to community cat caregivers across the state which includes education, training, resources, food programs, vouchers, help with transport and relocation, and mediation when needed.
  • Oversee and manage a current staff of three in the community cat initiatives.
  • Maintain statistics and reports on progress across the state, reporting as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience working or volunteering with a TNR program for an animal shelter or rescue.
  • Minimum of two years experience in project management with strong organizational skills and the ability to flexibly handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Bachelors degree strongly preferred.
  • Spanish speaking bilingual candidates strongly preferred.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, and energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Proven problem solving skills.
  • Willing and able to travel and work for extensive periods across the state and elsewhere to support the community cat initiatives.
  • Ability to work in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License with access to transportation and clean driving record for the past three years.
  • Experience with and ability to drive large multi-passenger vehicles.
  • Vaccinations against tetanus, Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, and pre-exposure Rabies. (or willingness to get those vaccinations).

Physical Requirements:

  • Involves strenuous physical labor for long periods of time in a variety of adverse environmental conditions to include, but not limited to walking, hiking, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing, lifting animals of all sizes and/or supplies, sitting and/or driving for extended periods of time.
  • Extended periods of time working at a computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
  • Willing and able to work varied hours and dates to include holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to effectively and safely handle a variety of animals and spend extended periods of time with those animals in close quarters.
  • Tolerance for exposure to a variety of environmental/weather conditions.
  • Willing and able to travel via various forms of public transportation for organization business.
