Statement from Best Friends Animal Society regarding
the NFL's decision to reinstate Michael Vick
Any person who is released from prison is allowed to seek and hold employment. The National Football League today decided to give Mr. Vick a chance to return to work as a professional football player. He says he understands the mistakes he made in the past, and we can only hope that he is sincere and able to take steps to turn his life around.
Best Friends Animal Society, though its work with 22 victims of the Michael Vick dog fighting case, is campaigning to educate the public on the cruelty of dog fighting. Our hope is to improve the image of all dogs that are the unfortunate victims of cruelty, such as the American Pit Bull Terrier and dogs that resemble pit bulls.
Though our our focus is clearly on helping the animals and educating the public. We have and will continue to let the courts and law enforcement deal all people accused of dog fighting, with the hope that this horrible practice can be eliminated.
The challenge to end dog fighting goes on throughout the United States. Recently, a large group of dogs was rescued in Missouri and we hope that rescue groups from across the country will unite to help save the latest victims of animal cruelty following this latest dog fighting bust.
