The Great Bunny Rescue 2006
Labor Day Bunny Run - 500 Reno bunnies find a home

Kanab, UT (08/31/2006) - For a group of 500 rescued bunnies in Reno, Nevada, it's the best Labor Day ever!
That's because none of them will be going into labor, and all of them are headed for good new homes.
"The 500" bunnies are part of one of the largest animal rescue operations ever: 1,600 rabbits all clambering over each other in a small backyard at a home in Reno, Nevada.
"It's our biggest rescue effort since Hurricane Katrina," said Michael Mountain, president of Best Friends. "Hundreds of the bunnies were sick and injured, and they all needed spaying or neutering. When we started there were about 50 babies being born literally every day!"
These 500 are among the last to be placed in good homes. One person adopted some of the bunnies into a specially constructed home with a special "bunny area" including a patio. Fifteen adopted rebbits put on a daily show at their new home in Huntsville, Texas, with people stopping by to watch them run and sprawl in the sun on their back.
During their rescue and rehabilitation, the bunnies and their antics have been featured several times on national television.
The new home for these 500 is at the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary in Willis, Michigan. Richard Crook, in charge of the bunny rescue, said that transporting "the 500" across the country has been quite a challenge but that dozens of volunteers are helping.
