Cyrus Mejia

Cyrus and his wife Anne are both among the group of founders of Best Friends Animal Society.

Cyrus is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. After studying art at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, he spent several years abroad. In 1971, a chance visit to a research laboratory in London, England, turned into a life-changing experience.

"I was so shocked and moved by what I saw, that I had no choice but to try and help animals in any way that I could," Cyrus says. Cyrus's art reflects his passion for the animals and the earth; he is the unofficial "artist in residence" at Best Friends. His artwork is included in the 575 Project, which is touring the U.S. in 2004, helping to share the message of No More Homeless Pets.

"The painting process fills me with sense awe," explains Cyrus. "From concept composition, out chaos into - I become immersed... If there a message in my work it is that are, each one us, connected to circle. We belong. But we also share responsibility for balance and harmony the whole picture." You can see some of Cyrus' extraordinary artwork on his website.

Angel Canyon, home to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, is also home for Cyrus and Anne and their many cats and dogs.
