Cathie Myers, Humane Education Manager
Cathie Myers is the manager of education for Best Friends Animal Society. She is the editor for the Educators for Animals community on the Best Friends Network. Cathie also helps facilitate the How to Start an Animal Sanctuary and Dog Behavior and Handling workshops, as well as The Giving Heart Retreat at Best Friends.
Cathie and her team provide encouragement and support to youth and adults all over the country who care about animals and want to make a difference in their lives. In addition, they organize and staff educational and outreach booths at teacher conferences and local events. Programs of the Humane Department include Youth Teams at Best Friends and a general animal-care internship for people age 20 and over.
Cathie serves on the board of directors of the Association of Professional Humane Educators, a national organization that supports humane educators everywhere.
Cathie has more than 18 years of experience in early childhood education; she has worked as the assistant director of childcare center, as a preschool and kindergarten teacher, and as a mentor teacher. In her own education, she has focused on nature, science, the environment and early childhood education.
She and her photographer husband, Clay Myers, had several years of experience volunteering for wildlife causes prior to joining Best Friends in 2002. Cathie was born and raised in southeastern Pennsylvania and has lived in Arizona, New Jersey, Maine and Washington. She and her husband have four dogs and three cats at home.
