Ed Fritz, Dogtown Personnel Manager
As Dogtown personnel manager, Ed Fritz has the daily task of overseeing the staff in his department. He is responsible for the people responsible for the dogs of the sanctuary. His mission is to ensure that everyone is on the right track about giving the dogs in their charge the best care possible. He enjoys talking to the staff about their concerns and ideas about how Dogtown can be even better.
Before coming to Best Friends, Ed managed a popular restaurant in SoHo, New York, for a few years. He then started his own fine furniture/art moving company. It was during a moving job that Ed was introduced to the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) shelter. He began volunteering with them, and was amazed at what a difference one person could make in the life of an animal who had been abandoned or abused.
Ed continues to relish making a difference in the lives of the animals here at the sanctuary while they await their forever homes. He loves getting involved, whether it's by fostering a special-needs pup or helping to dig holes for fence posts. Best Friends has offered him the opportunity to help companion animals in need on a much greater scale than he could have ever imagined. He was also involved in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and believes what he learned from that experience will stay with him forever.
Ed grew up outside the suburbs of Chicago. He played bass for many years in local bands, and it was this pursuit that brought him to New York City. He was having marginal success when his band broke up, and a chance meeting at a Tom Waits festival introduced him to his soon-to-be wife. He currently lives in Kanab with his wife, their two dogs, Topaz and Scratch, and four crazy cats, Tivali, Plumpkin, Mr. Cat and Sigmund. He believes the cats will get along as soon as there's peace in the Middle East.
