Steve Scheurich, Operations Manager for Parrot Garden and the Bunny House

As the operations manager for Parrot Garden and the Bunny House, Steve oversees the everyday operations of those two parts of the sanctuary. He manages staff, prepares work schedules, assigns specific duties and reviews financial statements. His goal is to efficiently and effectively provide optimal care to the animals and education to the staff while staying within budgetary limits. He is also responsible for establishing and implementing departmental policies, goals and objectives.

Before coming to Best Friends, Steve spent 18 years in the management and executive departments of a large Midwestern corporation. He worked for several years as the assistant director at Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Texas, one of the largest rehabbers in the country. Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation has nearly 500 exotic animals, including big cats and primates, all rescued from the exotic pet trade or research facilities. It's the place where Steve met his wife, Best Friends veterinarian Dr. Debra Nicholson. Steve also founded and directed Sacred Mountain Wildlife Center in Colorado.

Working at Best Friends is a dream come true for Steve. He says it's pretty special to be involved with an organization in which he can make a difference today and into the future, and to be able to work alongside his life partner.

Steve and Dr. Deb have four sons: Zack, Adam, Nick and Bodhe. Zack is a veterinarian in Olympia, Washington, and would someday like to end up at Best Friends. Their pet family consists of four dogs, two cats and two parrots.
