Mobile Spay/Neuter in the Nation's Capital
Washington, D.C. - Capital Animal Care hosted its first spay/neuter clinic on their Capital Area Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic. The group aims to provide free and low-cost spay/neuter for pets of low-income residents in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Council Supports Spay/Neuter Clinic

Midnight Muttness Finds Homes for 156

4,000 Attend Adoption Event
Vienna, Virginia - In spite of clouds and rain, more than 4,000 people attended the GoodDogz.org Healthy Hound Dog Walk and Adoption event. More than 80 dogs and 13 rescue organizations were showcased.

Helping Homeless Dogs Look Their Best
New York, New York - A few lucky dogs awaiting adoption at the Humane Society of New York will be looking smart for their prospective new parents as a result of an ongoing training program. Ohio Prisons Gladly Go to the Dogs
Ohio - The Tender Loving Care program pairs homeless dogs with inmates to help prepare the dogs for adoption. The program now operates in 30 of Ohio's 33 prisons. Prison officials report that the program has significantly reduced jailhouse violence. See the story in the Washington Post.

Why Adopt Just One?

Cats Orphaned by Iraq War Adopted
Akron, Ohio - Friends of Pets found a home for two cats whose person, a U.S. Marine, was killed by a car bomb in Iraq. Now they're living in a home where adoption is a habit for both children and pets. Read the story in the Akron Beacon Journal.

Survival of the Fixed

Injured Dog Digs Up Cash
Allentown, Pennsylvania - Scooby may be the size of a softball, but he's helped raise a pile of money. The seven-week-old pup with a broken leg inspired donations in excess of $20,000 to the Lehigh County Humane Society to pay for his veterinary care. The additional money will go into a fund called "Scooby Two" to help other injured animals. See the article in the Morning Call.

152-Year-Old Dog Promotes No More Homeless Pets
Jack, a stray dog rescued by Wells Fargo Special Agent John Q. Jackson back in 1852, has been memorialized as the representative for Wells Fargo Home Mortgages national program to help support Best Friends Animal Society's goal of No More Homeless Pets. The Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Sharing Advantage ProgramŽ will donate $300 for each home loan transaction originated and closed through Wells Fargo national representative Len Armer. Students' Penny Challenge Raises $900

Making Cruelty a Felony
Tennessee - The General Patton/Gizmo bill (named for abused animals) has passed, making animal cruelty a felony in the state of Tennessee. Read the story on the WMC-TV website.

"How Hard Can It Be?"
Texas - The colorful Kinky Friedman of Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, who also writes offbeat country songs and pens mysteries, now wants to be governor of Texas. Kinky's slogan for the 2006 campaign: "How Hard Can It Be?" Friedman's platform includes outlawing cat declawing and making Texas a no-kill state. Chained to a Doghouse
State College, Pennsylvania - This Fourth of July, Tammy Sneath Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, will chain herself to a doghouse for 33 hours to raise awareness of the plight of chained and penned dogs. It's part of the annual Chain Off event.

Fixing 1,000 Stray Dogs Each Month

Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), Sonora, Mexico - Veterinarian Kit Hoffman from the Arizona Animal Welfare League in Phoenix and her assistant Debbie Dicko lent a hand at a spay/neuter clinic at The Rocky Point Animal Adoption Center.

Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference
