Even if you can only drive a short way, you can be an invaluable part of getting an animal to where he's going! Look how many volunteers it took to get this fellow to safe haven at Best Friends.

Bijou was a "hard to place" dog. She suffered from severe separation anxiety, which led to all kinds of destructive behaviors if she was left alone for more than a few minutes at a time. That can make it a lot more difficult for a dog that's looking for a good new home.

Bijou needed some extra time and training to have a good chance at finding a real home. But that was going to be a problem at the shelter in North Carolina, where she'd been rescued.

We agreed to bring her to the sanctuary. But Best Friends is a long way from North Carolina! A transport group took on the job of arranging her trip, and  sixteen volunteers all across the country offered to take part. One of the travel logs went like this:

"As I write this, Bijou is on her way from Terre Haute, Indiana, to Effingham, Illinois. She's traveling with Jo, who picked her up from Kathy, and will be delivering her to Renee at the Cracker Barrel just off the I-70. That's just one leg of Bijou's journey from Raleigh, North Carolina, to Best Friends. All in all, 16 people, from across the country, are volunteering in the relay team that's driving her the 2,453 miles to the sanctuary."

As it turned out, some winter snows halted the car travel a little further along the way, but we arranged for Bijou to make the rest of the trip by air.
