Life with Greyhounds
Is There a Greyhound for You?
Would you like to adopt a Greyhound? Claudia Presto of the Greyhound Gang answers a few common questions about Greyhounds as pets.
Do Greyhounds need to have lots of room to run?
No. Greyhounds are trained to be sprint runners, not endurance runners. They need about as much exercise as other large dogs, and not any more. As they get older, of course, as with other dogs, they need less and less exercise. Some Greyhounds can be real couch potatoes! Claudia says, "Adopting a Greyhound means sharing your couch!"
Can older people handle a Greyhound?
Yes, particularly older Greyhounds. We love to place senior Greyhounds with retired people. Older greyhounds want nothing more than to hang with their people. They love to go for walks and car rides, watch TV, and share your couch. It's a win-win situation when a retired person adopts a retired racing greyhound.
Can Greyhounds live with cats?
Like other dogs, most are fine living with cats. And like other dogs, a few cannot understand that a house cat should not be chased. If you plan to adopt any kind of dog, and you have cats at home, make sure the dog has been behavior tested.
Do Greyhounds get along with other kinds of dog?
Yes. Occasionally, as with other dogs, a Greyhound does poorly with small dogs. But most Greyhounds should be fine with any dog. All reputable adoption groups check their dogs to profile what their best homes might be.
What special precautions should we take with a Greyhound?
Greyhounds should always be on a leash when they're outside and not in a fenced area, because they are sight hounds and will run off.
