Cats at the Conference

By Faith Maloney

Amid the lights and bustle of an always hectic Las Vegas, Nevada, sits the Alexis Park Resort, an oasis of calm with an inner courtyard of pools and shade trees and spacious meeting rooms for our first No More Homeless Pets conference of 2004.

This tranquil setting had also become a magnet for quite a few feral cats seen darting around the trees all through the conference. Donna Cox of Alley Cat Allies, primed by Best Friends staff who knew that the cats were a problem to the hotel management, talked to them about trap/neuter/return and set up a program with local Las Vegas animal groups to create a managed colony at the hotel. This ticklish situation provided an on-the-spot demonstration of conflict resolution for the conference attendees.
