Life as an Intern
Best Friends Internships are in session! And as usual, they seem to be attracting the best, the brightest and the biggest-hearted.
For Derin Darby, a six week internship at Best Friends, reaching out to animals and learning the ins and outs of a sanctuary, is just one stop on a whirlwind of good deeds.
Last summer, she enjoyed a two-month internship at Shepherd's Green in Tennessee, a sanctuary for 190 potbellied pigs! There, she got to live in a big farm house and learn hands-on how to take care of these intelligent creatures, so many of whom are in need of loving homes.
And before that? Derin joined AmeriCorp, where she helped children learn how to read. She found the program very rewarding! Though she did wish that helping animals had been one of the program options, too.
So what's next? Derin isn't sure. But she has known ever since she finished college that she wanted to devote herself to "helping," and she is busily exploring all the options out there, to see what's available to a strong, bright woman who wants to make a difference.
