Lesson Plan:
Animals Helping People
Objective
To teach students that animals can help people.
Materials
Copies of "
Dr. Dog's Rx for Sick Kids"
Procedure
Students will read "Dr. Dog's Rx for Sick Kids" about a Sheltie named Alar who visits a hospital and helps sick children. After students have read the story, lead a brainstorming session about ways in which animals can help people. Then have students write their own story about an animal, real or imaginary, who helps them.
Or, students can write an essay about why therapy dogs like Alar are successful at helping people. What characteristics does Alar have that help him relate to people in a hospital?
Community Helpers: Invite someone from an organization that works with dogs to come and speak to the class. Some possible examples are: Search and Rescue Dogs, a volunteer with therapy dogs, someone who has a guide dog, or a police officer with the K-9 corps.
