Humane Happenings

Humane education is a part of daily life at the sanctuary. Here's a few stories about recent visitors and events!

"Happiness is like jam, you can't spread even a little without getting some on yourself."
A group of teens who visited the sanctuary recently offer a view of Best Friends in their own words.

Getting Creative with Kids
The humane education team at Best Friends thought up creative ways to help kids celebrate how wonderful it is to have animals in their lives.

Raindancers Help the Sanctuary
The Raindancer program helps native teens who may be struggling on their paths to adulthood. "Helping others instills a sense of self-worth," said one of their counselors. "Whether it's animals or people."

Almost Sisters
Laurel Holding and Melissa Espino left California as strangers, but as Best Friends interns, discovered they had a lot in common, including a newfound love of horses.

Trading Places
Six years ago, Niki Wior graduated from a Best Friends' How to Start a Sanctuary workshop, and now her Los Angeles rescue group, Much Love Animal Rescue, has been named the number one animal rescue by Animal Fair magazine.

Kindergarten Summer Camp
A group of K-2 students escape the summer heat to learn about animals, play games, and meet some Best Friends bunnies.

At Ease, 9th Graders!
Sixty-eight ninth graders started off their school year with a group trip to Best Friends.

Life as an Intern
For Derin Darby, a six week internship at Best Friends, reaching out to animals and learning the ins and outs of a sanctuary, is just one stop on a whirlwind of good deeds.

A New Beginning
A group from  the Genesis Youth Center was at Best Friends last week, building trails and helping take care of the cats.

A Family Affair
While Sara Krumweide of Perham, Minnesota, was busy with her veterinary externship at the Best Friends clinic, her mother, Robin Anderson, was volunteering at Dogtown.

Calendar Dogs
Emily Ritt, a Best Friends intern, made it her special project to create a furry-faced calendar using photos she had taken of Best Friends dogs.

We and Our Shadow
Sharon Wehling, a veterinary student at Iowa State University, spent two weeks shadowing Dr. Virg Clemans and Dr. Laura Lodwick. Sharon came to Best Friends on a grant from Maddie's Fund.

Taffy's Tutor
Molly Wald's internship at Best Friends focused on what she could do to make a difference for one animal. Molly met Taffy when they both went on a Best Friends adoption day.
