The Sanctuary

Horses have been a part of Best Friends since it began over twenty-five years ago.   Just like dogs, cats, bunnies and birds, horses carry their own unique challenges and needs.  In the Equine Sanctuary Basics workshop we share what we have learned from our experiences in Horse Haven helping these magnificent animals.

Though each session is a little different, these are some of the topics that are covered:

  • Strategic planning
  • Defining your sanctuary's mission
  • Training rescued horses
  • Adoption programs
  • Farrier care and lameness issues
  • Veterinary issues
  • Special needs equine care
  • Housing, facilities and the behind the scenes details
  • Networking with other rescues and sanctuaries
  • Outreach and education
  • Alternatives to starting a sanctuary

With a combination of classroom time and hands on work with the animals, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to operate a sanctuary.  You will have the opportunity to not only network with the other attendees, but also with some of the founders of Best Friends and several of the highly trained professionals on staff at Horse Haven including the farrier, veterinarian staff and trainers.

"The workshop information was very beneficial in terms of providing an overview of the various aspects of running an equine sanctuary/adoption center.  Jen and the staff were extremely knowledgeable and open to our questions.  This was a great networking venue!" -- Previous Attendee

If your dream is to start a sanctuary for equines, you will want to attend this three day intensive workshop.  Our hope is that you will go home inspired and determined to fulfill your dream of helping equines in need, and also be armed with some practical tools and information to help you make your vision successful.
