DogTown Animal Care Operations Manager Jeff Popowich and the Best Friends team drive over 1600 miles to assist in an animal rescue operation after Hurricane Gustav hits New Orleans. Jeff rescues several dogs including Rose, a Pit Bull who needs immediate medical attention. The dog so emaciated that Jeff is worried about damage to Rose’s organs. At the shelter, Jeff discovers blood in Rose’s stool and takes her to an emergency animal hospital. Once back at Dogtown, Rose begins to gain back her weight, and starts a new life off the streets.
Sophie, a Sheltie mix, is highly protective of people she knows, and sometimes acts out aggressively when new people approach. Animal Behavior Consultant Sherry Woodard wants to help this dog with her dangerous behavioral problems by getting her comfortable around other dogs and new people. Although Sophie and Sherry have a positive relationship, Sherry believes Sophie views her as property. If Sherry can teach Sophie to be safe around people, she could have a chance at adoption and life outside of Dogtown. It's hard to imagine how Ellie had survived at all. Ellie was one of 21 hounds in Dunlap, TN that had lived for two years untouched by human hands on a flea invested fenced porch and in a dark barn that hadn’t been cleaned since the death of their owner’s husband. When she arrives at Best Friends, Veterinarian Mike Dix removes a suspicious tumor and treats a variety of other medical conditions that Ellie suffers from.
