Video update

Who are those cute dogs in the video?

That’s Gwennie and Moccasin. They’re best friends, and they also live here at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

They live together, and play together. And since they both have special needs, they both hop in the car and go to hydrotherapy sessions together, every single week.

Gwennie has always been active dog. But she became lame in one of her back legs. It turned out it was a torn cranial cruciate ligament, similar to what football players sometimes get. The Best Friends vets got right on it, and performed surgery so that this dog who loves to run wouldn’t become homebound. And eight weeks after surgery? She’s started to feel like a brand new dog again!

Moccasin came to Best Friends with a dislocated hip – so he could relate to Gwennie’s problem! He too needed surgery, and his recovery process would take even longer, because it was that much more serious. Plus, he’d gone a long time without treatment before making it to Best Friends, which sure doesn’t make fixing him any easier!

But today, Moccasin and Gwennie are both running around and playing together.

Thanks to Guardian Angels like you!

What’s new with Rex?

Rex came to Best Friends in terrible shape. He was starving, dehydrated, and had a gory wound around his middle!

He’d been passed from home to home for quite a while, and good care got lost somewhere in the passing.

But at Best Friends, he got critical medical care and a special diet to strengthen his lagging immune system. Plus, he was a little nippy and unpleasant sometimes cause he hadn’t had enough cuddle time in his life up till now. But his caregivers helped gentle him into a new outlook.

And now, he’s a much happier and healthier boy! He has the Best Friends promise that he’ll never know sadness and neglect again.

What’s new with Sweet William?

Sweet William is definitely his own kind of cat. His friends say he lives in “Sweet William world”. He seems to have been born with a neurological problem that makes him cross-eyed, but more importantly, makes him have seizure episodes where he may fall over or lash out or suddenly not realize what’s going on around him.

Flower essences and a low-stress environment are helping Sweet William a lot here at the sanctuary. And most crucially, he’ll never have to worry about being put down for being the way he was born. For as long as he needs to, and for as long as it take him to search for a home, he can live a happy, cage-free life at the sanctuary, surrounded by friends who accept him just the way he is, and help him in every way they can.

What’s new with Victoria?

Victoria was missing the feathers on top of her head. Not so unusual for a parrot in captivity to pluck at herself (In fact, it’s a common problem, and Victoria, raised as a breeding bird, had been known to do it.) But wait! A parrot can’t pluck at her own head! That’s physically impossible. So what was going on?

It turned out that Victoria had a benign growth up there. So she’s needed some very special care. A new diet full of dark, leafy greens and supplements, plus extra moisture put into her environment have really worked wonders.

Her feathers have grown back in beautifully! And her spirits regaining their bright color as well.

What’s new with Reggie, Micky and Desiree?

Reggie, Micky and Desiree are all part of Best Friends’ Guardian Angel program, for animals with the most serious special needs. So you can read their biographies and keep up with regular journal entries from their friends here at the sanctuary.

What's new with Reggie?

Reggie has come such a long way since he arrived at Best Friends and is now looking for his forever home. He really needs a place where the sun does not shine all the time and cooler temps to keep him happy. Until the right person comes along, you will be able to follow his life at the sanctuary right here, on the Guardian Angel website.

What’s new with Micky?

Micky is really thriving at the sanctuary – and he’s actively looking for a home!

You can keep up with regular journal entries about Micky, written regularly by his friends here at Best Friends. Click here.

What’s new with Desiree?

You’d never know anything had been wrong with this cat! She is doing great. She’s thriving in her foster home, where she’s made great friends with the family dog.

You can keep up with Desiree regularly, as her friends keep a journal about her right here.

She’s also up for adoption!
