Humane Education
I Read to Animals
The Best Friends I Read to Animals program targets elementary students K-3 providing humane education lessons along with the opportunity for each child to read one-on-one with a trained pet partner team. It is a collaborative effort among Best Friends Education Ambassadors, libraries, schools, community youth groups and animal rescue organizations.*
Program Benefits:
- Builds kindness, compassion and respect towards animals
- Encourages language and reading skills in a non-judgmental environment
- Increases reading confidence and motivation to read
- May lower the stress level of young readers
Program Components:
- Best Friends Humane Education lesson
- Writing, art or craft activity
- Reading 1:1 with an animal
- Stuffed animal adoption
- I Read to Animals adoption certificate
*All dogs participating in the I Read to Animals program must be certified therapy dogs or registered through Delta Society.
