Kitty Goes Home

Sunshine's world has been stormy lately, but after surviving an auto accident, and being lost, she is going home. The Best Friends Network and two visitors at a recent How to Start an Animal Sanctuary workshop here helped bring about this happy ending.

The story began with a woman who was moving to California. She had her cats, Sunshine and Dusty, with her. While driving through Richfield, Utah, she was involved in a serious car crash that claimed Dusty's life. Sunshine could not be found and was presumed dead.

Once the woman was released from the hospital, she went to California, grieving the loss of her kitties. Then, during a call between her insurance company and the junkyard where her car ended up, she learned that Sunshine was at the junkyard office, terrified but safe.

Before the woman could arrange to collect Sunshine, the frightened feline escaped. Animal control finally caught Sunshine (who, fortunately, was microchipped). Best Friends Network was contacted for help and arrangements were made for Sunshine to stay at the sanctuary until transportation could be found to get her home.

As luck would have it, Douglas Mitchel, of Sebastapol, California, was coming to Best Friends for the sanctuary workshop. He asked if any animals needed transportation and was enlisted to give Sunshine a lift home. (He also brought a dog to Best Friends!)

En route to California, Sunshine's taxi service became a two-person venture. Since Douglas' motel had a no-pet policy, fellow sanctuary workshopper Maria Samaras, of Las Vegas, Nevada, provided overnight "kitty motel" accommodations for Sunshine.

In the end, everyone came away happy. "It's an amazing feeling to be helping another animal," Douglas said.
