Best Rescue

When the little stray cat started trying to get in his van, letter carrier Craig decided it was time to call Best Friends.

Craig lives in Lakewood, Ohio, and he knew he couldn't keep the cat himself. She was pregnant, too, and hanging around people's porches, begging. What would she do once the babies were born? She needed someone to love her and take care of her. Craig couldn't keep her, and he knew that taking her to a shelter where she might be killed wasn't the answer.

Here at the sanctuary, staffer Amy Hogg sent an e-mail to all members of the Best Friends Network who live near Craig.

Craig couldn't believe the results. "The first call I got was from Nadine of the Animal Rescue Center, right here in my area. By the time she telephoned me, she'd already arranged a foster-home!"

He couldn't arrange a rendezvous with Nadine right away, and wanted the cat to have somewhere to go that very night. No problem! Patty, in Avon Lake, just a short drive away, had received Amy's e-mail, too, and offered to take the kitty immediately! "I had e-mails from several people," said the delighted letter carrier. "They all wanted to help, and several wanted to take her. It's worked out wonderfully."

So, what is the Best Friends Network? It's you, the thousands of people who, in addition to being members of Best Friends, volunteer to help out in your own neighborhoods when there are animals in need. Learn more by reading the Network F.A.Q.

The Network gets bigger every day, and we're always looking for more kind people with an hour or two to spare who can help out by taking in a foster pet, driving an animal to a vet or to their new home, offering some professional advice, or helping out in any other way.

Thanks for calling, Craig. And thanks for joining the Best Friends Network, too!
