Charlie McGinley
Charlie McGinley, a former retail executive with Macy's department stores, has been in the animal field for almost 30 years. Charlie uses his experience in retailing and marketing to raise awareness of homeless animals not only in his own shelter but in areas as far reaching as the Bahamas.
With more than 26 years of experience in no-kill shelter operations, Charlie became the director of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in April 2002. Charlie believes that in order to be a success, a shelter has to become involved with the community and, in turn, the community will respond in a positive way to the shelter's programs and initiatives.
In the past two years, 14 new programs dedicated to adoptions, humane education, spay/neuter and community outreach have been created. As a result of these new programs, adoptions have dramatically increased while euthanasia has decreased. The shelter's save rate for the first four months of this year is 88%.
