Dave Sweeney
Dr. David Sweeney has been the veterinarian for No More Homeless Pets in Utah since January 2001. He serves as manager and primary surgeon of the Big Fix, No More Homeless Pet's mobile surgical van, which travels the entire state of Utah providing low cost spays and neuters to dogs and cats. In addition, he serves as consultant and veterinary liaison for No More Homeless Pets in Utah.
During Dr. Sweeney's tenure, the Big Fix has grown to become one of the most renowned mobile spay/neuter clinics in the country. In its second year, the Big Fix performed over 5800 surgeries without a single anesthetic or surgical death. In a survey of mobile spay/neuter clinics across the United States, the Big Fix had one of the lowest surgical complication rates in the country. Six months into its third, year the Big Fix has performed 4199 surgeries without a single anesthetic or surgical death, all the while continuing to have an astoundingly low complication rate.
Dr. Sweeney was born in Ames, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in 1990. After graduation, he worked in his father's equine practice and his uncle's small animal practice in suburban Minneapolis. In 1994 Dr. Sweeney moved to Salt Lake City, where he practiced in a small animal emergency clinic until 2000. From 1996 to 1999, he frequently helped out the spay/neuter clinic at the local humane society. In addition to working for No More Homeless Pets in Utah, he periodically fills in at a local emergency clinic.
Dr. Sweeney's wife Teri Mauch, is an Associate Professor of pediatric nephrology at the University of Utah. Together they have two children, Sarah and Sam, ages 5 and 3. They also have two dogs, Molly and Jack, ages 11 and 5, and a 5 month old kitten named Cooper. Dr. Sweeney also has a 13 year old son named Charlie, who lives with his mother in North Dakota.
In addition to spending time with his children, Dr. Sweeney enjoys mountain biking, jogging, reading, travelling and both downhill and cross country skiing.
