Dr. Leslie Appel


Dr. Leslie Appel is the founder and executive director of Shelter Outreach Services (SOS). SOS is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to decreasing the companion animal overpopulation problem.


Prior to starting SOS, she was a faculty member at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Appel's professional areas of interest are shelter medicine and the human-animal bond. While at Cornell, she started the Cornell Animal Sterilization Assistance Program.


Dr. Appel is a 1994 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell. Following graduation, she completed a small-animal internship at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. Then she spent a year as a surgery resident at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Appel has also done work in private practice.
