Dr. Mark Burgess

Dr. Mark Burgess owns the Southwest Animal Hospital/Exotic Animal Practice in Beaverton, Oregon. A 1986 graduate of Oregon State University's veterinary school, he has spent nearly 20 years in practice working on small exotic pets.

Currrently, 95 percent of his practice involves ferrets, rabbits, rodents, marsupials, hedgehogs, wildlife, reptiles and amphibians. He has lectured on exotic pet medicine in both local and national venues. He teaches a course in exotic pet medicine in the veterinary technician curriculum at Portland Community College and to veterinary students at Oregon State University. He is a lecturer for the Portland Veterinary Medical Association's continuing education series, discussing common diseases of exotic pets. He has also published articles on these interesting animals in various medical journals.

In addition, Dr. Burgess is licensed to rehabilitate wildlife in Oregon and he's a three-year member of the Wildlife Integrity Task Force, whose purpose is to determine which exotic species should be restricted from importation into Oregon due to potential risk to native wildlife.
