puppy photoPuppies. They look so cute in pet stores. But their innocent faces hide a terrible secret ...

Far from the public eye, an underground world supplies the retail puppy trade.

Filled with suffering mother and father dogs who are forced to churn out litter after litter of pups, these factory farms - called "puppy mills" - are part of a massive breeding industry.

Because of the work of Best Friends and other humane organizations, many of these "pet breeding factories" are finally being shut down.

But what will become of the mother dogs ... the father dogs ... and the orphan pups who've been left homeless?

  • The less-than-perfect puppies, cast-off due to birth defects like weak hips, deafness and mental problems - just a few of the problems that plague "pure bred" dogs from puppy mills.

  • Or the "breeder" dogs, who spend their entire lives in cramped cages, producing pups until their bodies give out ... and they're auctioned off to the lowest bidder.

Without Best Friends, many of these tender hearts will have nowhere to go for the special care they so desperately need.

But right now at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, space is limited.

That's why we're building the new Puppy Care Center.

For cast-off puppies - and homeless mother and father dogs, too - the Puppy Care Center at Best Friends will offer safe haven. A place to heal. A chance to join a loving, forever family.

You can help build that safe haven.

You'll be making a lasting difference in their lives ... just when they need you most. Here's why:

  • Instead of adopting from a local shelter, 8 out of 10 people who bring a pet into their home buy one from a pet store. And that simply alerts puppy mills and backyard breeders that it's time to start the cycle again: to churn out even more puppies.

  • Many pups who come from these "breeding factories" are taken from their mothers too soon ... and dismal conditions cause many to suffer from chronic illnesses and birth defects.

  • Most breeding moms and dads barely know the touch of a human hand. Days pass with no contact from pets or people, unless they're being pulled from their cages to breed. For those who are rescued, everything about the real world terrifies them.

  • The helpless pups and mother dogs - without real-life skills or desperately ill - are often abandoned, left to face a too-soon end in crowded shelters or on the streets.

With a new Puppy Care Center, Best Friends can give hope to these cast-off pets.

Here are some of the special ways that the Puppy Care Center at Best Friends will:

  • Treat the chronic illnesses and defects that plague the sickest orphan puppies and abandoned mothers, through state-of-the-art medical care.

  • Keep newborn pups and their mothers together, safe and secure, in special family suites.

  • Give once-terrified mother and father dogs - who are often "unadoptable" in traditional shelters - the everyday skills they need to join forever families. From the feel of carpet to the sound of a vacuum cleaner, they'll learn it all in a new "real-life" room.

  • Find good new homes for these tender hearts through effective, nationwide adoption programs.

  • And more - for specifics on the layout of the Puppy Care Center, click here.

You can make a lasting difference in the lives of abandoned mother dogs and homeless puppies. Donate to build the Puppy Care Center at Best Friends ... and bring these tender hearts home.

Thank you for caring about the animals!
