 In April of this year, the eBay Foundation - through its newly launched Community Gives program - dedicated more than $330,000 in "seed grant" funds to help build The Puppy Care Center at Best Friends.
It couldn't have come at a better time.
Every day across America, thousands more puppies are born - enough to fill a small town. Many are born homeless ... many others soon will be. And their mothers have been cast-off, too.
Yet, more can be done to make a lasting difference in their lives at this moment, than at perhaps any other.
Why? Because...
- 8 out of 10 people who bring a pet into their home buy one instead of adopting. More demand equals more puppies: from backyard breeders, pet stores and puppy mills.
- Many pups who come from these "factory farms" are weaned too early ... and poor conditions cause many to suffer from chronic illnesses and birth defects
- Too, most breeding moms and dads receive precious little contact with other pets or people, so they lack social skills.
- The problem pups and mother dogs without real-life skills or desperately ill are often abandoned, left to face a too-soon end in crowded shelters or on the streets.
When puppy mills are busted, there's often nowhere for these innocent puppies and their helpless mothers to go. And Best Friends is one of the only places where they can get the special care they need to heal - body and soul.
But right now at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, space is limited.
With a new Puppy Care Center, Best Friends can give hope to these cast-off pets.
Here are some of the very special ways that the Puppy Care Center at Best Friends will:
- Treat the chronic illnesses and defects that plague the sickest orphan puppies and abandoned mothers, through state-of-the-art medical care.
- Keep newborn pups and their mothers together, safe and secure, in special family suites.
- Give homeless puppies the skills they need to fit into everyday families - from the feel of carpet to the sound of a vacuum cleaner - in a new "real-life" room.
- Find good new homes for these tender hearts through effective, nationwide adoption programs.
Thanks to eBay's generous "seed grant," Best Friends will soon break ground on The Puppy Care Center.
