I Wanted A Rottweiler!
After my golden retriever (Walter) passed away after 14 years, I decided I wanted to get a Rottweiler puppy. I have a large back yard and wanted a dog that would be considered somewhat a watchdog. I found an ad in the newspaper from a breeder and put my $100 deposit down on a female Rottweiler. They painted her toe red and told me to come back in four weeks.
During the course of the four weeks, I wondered if I should also get another dog to keep the Rottweiler company and have a friend.
On March 1,2001, three months after my Walter passed, Best Friends was having an Adoption fair at Petsmart in my hometown. I went there to find a friend for my Rottweiler. I found Mick, a junkyard type looking dog with pure love and need in his eyes. While we were filling out all the forms one of the volunteers there said that Mick had a brother and that they were both found wondering around abandoned in a little town in Utah.
When I went to see his brother in the pen, he came right up to me and put his head down in a calming manner. He had huge feet and I knew he was going to be a large dog. At that moment I brushed off how deeply he touched my heart because I wanted my Rottweiler.
We drove away with Mick in the car and my heart was broken that I was taking him away from his brother. My husband and I looked at each other, and at the same moment knew we had to go back.
We named Mick's brother Carter, and I never got my Rottweiler. Instead I got the two best dogs I could have ever hoped for. They are now three years old. I work from home, so they are my friends and best co-workers anyone can have. Everyday at three p.m., they wait for their chew, and on Sundays they know that at eight p.m. they get their doggie ice cream (Frosty Paws).
They even love the two cats that I had when I brought them home. The cats actually sleep with them when the dogs aren't playing with their tails.
Thank you Best Friends for giving me these two wonderful friends. I never gave a second thought to the Rottweiler.
