Enza

Enza is a seven year old Vizsla that I have cared for since she was 12 weeks old. When Enza was just a year old, she was hit by a car and lost her paw from the wrist down.

She has been wearing a series of prosthetic legs since shortly after he accident, thanks to the help of a gentleman who works with human prosthetics in a Boston Veteran's hospital.

The surgeries were made possible by an extraordinary effort on behalf of Dr. Miles at Veazie Veterinary Hospital and the doctors at Oyster River Veterinary Hospital in Lee, New Hampshire who had previous experience with such amputations.

The collaboration between these individuals gave Enza an opportunity that most dogs would not have had, given the standard procedure to amputate at the shoulder.

Enza is a wonderfully active dog that joins me in every activity. She loves walking several miles with me, hiking all around the state, camping, swimming, and she even tries to rock climb with me and my boyfriend, although she never makes it further than standing on her back feet.

I have tried throughout Enza's lifetime to expand people's awareness of the existence of dog prosthetics. While three-legged dogs can experience a full life, I feel that Enza has been much more capable of living a normal life full of activity without the added exertion from hopping.

Her favorite activity in the summer is digging in the dirt, whether it's in pursuit of a small critter or making a cool spot to escape the heat. Had her full leg been amputated, she would not be able to enjoy this activity. She is extremely active and enjoys playing with toys and other dog friends.
