Danny
I first saw Danny in the woods near my house a couple Decembers ago. His white chest fur had me calling him "Dapper Dan since it looked like he was wearing an ascot. Later a friend identified him as a "Tuxedo cat." It took a while but he finally came closer to the house - food on the back porch helped, and I could see that his tail had been badly damaged.
Eventually he would come close enough that I could touch him, gingerly, but no holding or petting was allowed. After a talk with my vet I learned that if I brought him (or her) in, the vet would probably have to amputate the tail, which is what I'd expected. Finally, after a few false starts, I managed to get Danny in the cat carrier and to the vet's for surgery.
He now has just a nub for a tail, which can be pretty expressive, and a microchip. He is a very loveable fellow, who likes to be picked up and sung to - "Danny Boy" is his favorite. He was a bit of work (and lots of scratches), but worth every bit of it.
