Speedie
There are three cockatoos and one macaw here; its all I can safely manage. My first "child" came to me in 2000. Speedie, the result of at least six homes before he came here, is a Triton/Sulphur Crested, male, 20 years old, is a habitual shredder.
As many bird people know, cockatoos are unique in their craving for companionship. Speedie had been abused more than once, just because he screamed all the time.
Well why would a happy bird scream? The answer is, they don't. A screaming bird is doing the last thing it knows to do to convey its needs aren't being met.
When he came to me, he was in a cockatiel cage, one perch, the size you would expect to see in a finch cage, his water was so fouled it looked like green & white Jell-O.
His tail feathers were very short, because of continual rubbing against the small sized cage bars, and he was a light brown in color. My first sight of him was so horrible I agreed to anything the woman who had him asked, just BRING HIM TO ME FAST!
It has taken years to bring out his sweet personality, but now he is emotionally stable and doesn't scream at all. EVER. He still shreds, but he is a healthy weight and eats very well.
