It is always tough after you lose your best kitty friend after 20 years. You know you will want another new best friend at some point, but when is the right time?
I halfheartedly scanned the website for an adult male Persian to adopt, but it just felt disloyal and too soon. Fortunately, our beloved kitties become angels to intervene when their former owner needs a shove in the right direction.
I was taking my morning walk when I noticed a perfect rainbow. I don't know why, but I was sure that it was Tommy trying to send me a message from the other side of the bridge. Perhaps he had sent me a kitty to adopt and this was my cue to start acting.
I visited three shelters that day and found a Himalayan at my last stop. The only problem was the cat was a female and I wanted a male, so I decided to talk with an adoption counselor about putting my name on a waiting list for a male.
I should have known how slick those counselors are, not to mention my kitty angel was putting his two paws worth in from the great beyond. Before I knew it, they were bringing the Himalayan into the room and depositing her on my lap.
While I was trying to conjure up the words to explain how a female would never do, the kitty was busy crawling up my chest and had starting licking under my chin. This was both unnerving and consoling since this is exactly how Tommy used to lick while he was being brushed.
Looking back on this behavior, I suspect Tommy had done a little coaching with this kitty, teaching a winning demeanor. Needless to say she was quite the little fur-covered salesman and now resides in my household.
I have also renamed her Iris after the Greek Goddess of Rainbows, a reminder of that special message from an old friend.
