Number of Lives Saved at L.A. Animal Services Continues to Trend Upward with Latest Statistics
LOS ANGELES - The work of a coalition of more than 50 animal rescue groups, led by Best Friends Animal Society in partnership with Los Angeles Animal Services, to achieve a No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA), is making progress with each passing month.
The latest statistics regarding animals killed at LA city animal shelters continue to go down, with 227 less animals killed in January, 2013, compared with January, 2012. Compared with January of 2011, the baseline year for statistical comparison, the numbers are even better, with 324 fewer killed than two years ago.
The statistics were released recently by LA Animal Services.
"This is reflective of the continuing great effort between private animal rescue groups and LA Animal Services," said LA Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette. "This is a very exciting and challenging task we have before us moving the city to no-kill status, but we are gaining momentum with each passing month and the Animal Services staff is more determined than ever to reach our goal."
Francis Battista, a co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society, which organized the coalition, says his organization is very pleased with the progress made so far-shelter killing down, overall shelter intake is down, while both adoption and spay-neuter is up.
"We are exceeding our goals, but there is still much to be done," Battista said.
"However, with so many great accomplishments in our first year of NKLA, including the great numbers from January, we are encouraged and energized about where we are. All of the NKLA Coalition's work and focus is on taking Los Angeles to the point where at least 90 percent of all the animals entering our city's shelters are leaving those shelters alive and going into good, new homes."
In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, Best Friends Animal Society manages the Best Friends Pet Adoption and Spay-Neuter Center in Mission Hills, located at the site of the former Northeast Valley Animal Shelter. Best Friends was approved in late 2011 by the City Council to operate a pet adoption and spay/neuter center at the site, thereby establishing a unique public/private partnership with the city.
