Best Friends National Conference side trips
After the Best Friends National Conference, you’ll get the chance to see lifesaving in action by touring Best Friends’ adoption centers in L.A. Each center offers a front-row seat to innovative adoption practices in a dynamic setting. You can sign up for one of these Sunday side trips when you register for the conference.
Cost is $10 per person. Transportation to and from the tour is provided. Due to space restrictions, registration is limited and is for conference attendees only.
Tour of NKLA Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles (45-minute tour)
Since 2013, the state-of-the-art NKLA Pet Adoption Center has served as a model for how the animal welfare community can work together to save lives. The center hosts adoptable animals from both Best Friends and more than a dozen Best Friends Network partners, all working under uniform adoption policies and a welcoming, pro-adoption philosophy.
The adoption center engages potential adopters with its bright, open design and striking NKLA graphics. It also features the latest interactive touch-screen technology to share information about available pets in real time and allow personalized pet matchmaking services. Visually and functionally, the center offers a revolutionary approach to the pet adoption experience.
The tour will showcase the animal care and adoption areas, the facility’s use of design and technology, the concept of communal adoption programming and the beginnings of the NKLA Coalition.
Tour 1: Leaves the Westin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and returns at 11:15 a.m.
Tour 2: Leaves the Westin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and returns at 12:15 p.m.
Tour of Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills (60-minute tour)
The Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills opened in 2012 in partnership with Los Angeles Animal Services, serving as a high-volume adoption outlet for dogs and cats from L.A.’s six city shelters. This unique public-private partnership has resulted in tens of thousands of dogs and cats saved to date in Los Angeles.
The tour will include information about the center’s lifesaving programs, including dog play groups and behavior training, client-focused adoptions, specialty cat programming (e.g., ringworm management and “working cat” adoptions) and Best Friends’ kitten nursery.

Tour of Michelson Found Animals Adopt & Shop (60-minute tour)
It’s kitten season and the Michelson Found Animals Foundation (MFAF) Adopt & Shop Kitten Foster Project is in full swing. Come visit MFAF's unique adoption facility, where the mission is saving pets and enriching lives. In 2017, the program fostered more than 1,400 cats and kittens from NKLA Coalition partners and other local shelters. In addition to an awesome adoption space, MFAF offers day care, grooming services and retail products to support pets in the community. You will see how it all happens with a behind-the-scenes tour. And yes, you may just learn a little bit about how microchips can help you save lives, too. All proceeds support MFAF's mission and help save even more lives.
