Helpful tips for your visit to Best Friends

Book your lodging in advance.

Kanab is a tourist destination for the surrounding national parks, including Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon national parks. Please visit our places to stay page for lodging info as soon as possible because options book up fast.

You'll be on Mountain time.

Kanab is in the Mountain time zone, which is different from both Arizona and Nevada. We recommend adjusting your car clock accordingly when you visit.

Plan ahead for additional Sanctuary activities.

Workshops typically involve a full day's schedule. If you'd like additional time to go on tours, volunteer with the animals or schedule a sleepover, we recommend adding extra days to the start or end of your trip.

What to bring and what to wear

The Sanctuary is located in the high desert, where the climate is dusty and dry. Please come prepared with the following:

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A backup pair of eye glasses (if you wear contacts)
  • Closed-toe shoes (required for volunteering in all animal areas)
  • Long pants (required for volunteering with horses and pigs, but recommended in all areas)

Personal pet policy

We are unable to allow personal pets at workshops. If you are travelling with your pet, most lodging in Kanab is at least 10-15 minutes from the workshop location (except for the Best Friends cabins, cottages and RV sites). Please be aware that you may not have time to get back to your room to let your pets out during the day.
