Small cottage in the Utah desert surround by purple flowers and red rocks

Best Friends cottages

The cottages are nestled in the red-rock cliffs of Angel Canyon near the Best Friends Welcome Center and provide a lovely view of the horse pastures.

Check-in and checkout

Check-in time for the cottages is anytime after 3 p.m. Your cottage will be unlocked and your key will be in your room. We will check you in automatically. If you need an additional key, please make sure to check the next morning at the welcome center.

Checkout time is by 11 a.m. at the latest. You can leave your room keys on the hook by the door when you leave. It isn’t necessary to check out at the welcome center, but feel free to stop by for some last-minute gift shopping.

Checkout times are strictly enforced (as much as we dislike those last two words). This is so our small housekeeping crew can make full use of the short time frame for cleaning before new guests arrive. If you plan to take a morning tour or you are volunteering for a morning shift on your checkout date, please have your things packed and tucked away safely in your car ahead of time.

Directions to the cottages

Once you have made the turn into the Sanctuary and you’re nearing the welcome center, you will see horse corrals on the left. Just before the first corral is a sign for Angel Canyon Road, which marks the turn to the cottages. Follow the unpaved road and you will see the cottages up a slight hill to the left.

After 3 p.m., you can go directly to your cottage, which will be unlocked with a key inside. We will check you in automatically.

Parking at the cottages

There is assigned parking for one vehicle at each cottage. If you bring more than one vehicle, additional parking is available at the bottom of the hill before you reach the cottages.

Parking spaces for cottages #4 and #5 are more suited to accommodate compact/regular-sized vehicles. Those guests are urged to park at the bottom or top of the hill if driving something larger, to allow for traffic flow. Additionally, all of our cottage parking spaces are equipped with their own personal electric car charging station (with the exception of cottage #8, located at the bottom of the hill).

Booking and cancellation policies

What if my preferred dates are unavailable?
The Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile in Kanab is another fabulous option. We encourage you to check availability there, as well as the many other places to stay in town. Kanab is only five miles from the Sanctuary.

What is the deposit policy?
A valid credit card is required to guarantee all reservations.

What is the reservation modification policy?
If you need to cancel your reservation for any reason, please contact us immediately at lodging@bestfriends.org or 435-644-3400. Please note: A change in the length, dates or number of rooms in your reservation may result in a rate change or additional fees.

What are the policies on cancellation and no-shows?
Cancellations within two days of the arrival date, during a stay or no-shows will be charged one night’s stay per lodging space. Cancellations within 3 to 30 days of the arrival date will be charged a $25 fee per lodging space.

There is no charge for cancellations made 31 days or more from the arrival date. If you have not arrived by 3 p.m. on the day following your scheduled check-in date, we may release your cottage or cabin. No refunds, credits or transfers will be given following a no-show.

Pet policies

Can our pets stay in the cabins?
Our cottages can accommodate up to three animal companions. Your pets may be left alone inside while you are volunteering, if they are accustomed to being left unattended and are well-behaved. However, we ask that you please check on them regularly.

If your dog tends to bark from boredom or at new sights and sounds, please do not leave him or her in your room unattended. If your pet damages anything in your room, please let us know so that we can replace the item.

Due to abundant wildlife in the area and for the safety of your pets and other animals at the Sanctuary, please always keep your pets leashed when outside.

Some of the Sanctuary dogs on sleepovers and in training could become aggressive when approached by an unfamiliar dog. Help these pups-in-training learn to become model citizens. Cats can also go on sleepovers, so you might encounter a feline while out walking.

Amenities and policies

What is the difference between a cabin and a cottage?
The cottages can accommodate up to five guests and include a bedroom with two full beds and one twin-size rollaway bed. The cottages are located by the horse corrals, closer to some of our office buildings and the welcome center. They are more secluded and offer easy access to many walking trails. Each cottage has its own deck or patio.

The cabins are much smaller than the cottages and are intended to be occupied by one or two persons. The setup is studio-style with one queen-size Murphy bed. Cabin guests share a patio area. Cabins provide a more economical option for guests on tighter budgets or those who don’t need the extra space and amenities of a cottage.

Will I be able to make long-distance calls?
To make long-distance calls from your room, you will need a calling card, which can be purchased at local Kanab gas stations.

Is laundry service available at the Sanctuary?
There is one washer and dryer available to cottage and cabin guests located across from cottages 7 and 8, attached to the right side of the housekeeping building. It is free to use and first come, first served. Detergent and dryer sheets are provided.

Will I be able to cook in my accommodations?
The cottage kitchens feature a full-size refrigerator, two-burner stove top, built-in microwave, toaster and coffee maker. The cabins have a small kitchenette area with a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker.

Open flames (such as campfires and barbecues) are not permitted anywhere on Sanctuary property. Our climate is dry and we cannot risk the safety of our animals.

Can I have extra guests in my cottage?
The fee for additional guests (age 16 and older) in our cottages is $10 per person, per night.

Is smoking allowed?
Our cabins and cottages are non-smoking. Please be considerate of your neighbors if you smoke outside near the cabins or cottages.

Who should I call for housekeeping or maintenance?
Housekeeping services are provided only upon request. If you wish to have your cottage cleaned or you’d like to receive extra towels or bedding at any time during your stay, please contact the housekeeping staff at 435-243-7878 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you have an emergency after hours, please call the Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile at 435-644-3400.

Is my accommodation accessible?
Cottage 2 is ADA-compliant with a ramp for access. All the other cottages have stairs.
